Getting Ready for Some New York Poker
Okay, so I didn’t mention this in my first post, but whatever, it doesn’t really matter. I have never actually played at any of the underground poker clubs in Manhattan. My old boss on the trading floor, let’s call him Jacob, (he was a Managing Director, so for the past few years made a ton of money – and lost a lot to me making terrible bets) played a lot of these games. He usually played $10-20 and $25-50 no limit texas hold ‘em at these clubs and told me about all his games.
I was regaled daily with tales of why aces were his least favorite hand (“They never win”) and why 72 offsuit was his favorite (“They never see it coming”), and also with tales of how he always won so much money (somehow he never seemed to lose…). The more I’ve thought about it, the more I realized that if this idiot could make so much money, how could someone like ME ever lose??
So I vowed to talk to Jacob and ask him about these underground poker clubs, where they are, when they play, everything. He had already given me the basics, but now I needed to get into the nitty gritty. I called Jacob to tell him what I was looking for, and lo and behold he agreed to take me to a game, introduce me to the dealers, and let me go on my own from there. I mean this guy knew how smart I was, so there was really no reason for him not to help me out. If he can make money in these games, anyone can…
I will keep you all updated when I go, which should be some time in the next couple days.
I guess I should also let you know something that many of you are probably wondering about, the legal status of these games. From what I understand (and I am not sure this is right, so don’t quote me on it) it is legal to play in these games, but illegal to run or be the dealer in a game. Also, if the cops come in to break up the game, apparently they can take and keep your money. Sounds a lot like just getting robbed to me… Whatever though, I’m going to make so much it’s not going to matter.
